Architects need to accept responsibility for their role in creating the built environment and, consequently, believe we must alter our profession’s actions and encourage our clients and the entire design and construction to join with us to change the course of the planet’s future.”

Buildings Database

The data and links provided in our database are not new, but this is the first time all the information has been gathered into one online place, putting the world of high-performance buildings at your fingertips. The projects listed have typically met or exceeded the 50 percent beyond code requirement for energy use. A few others have been included because they employ interesting applications for reduced energy use, although their actual performance is not yet known. About the Getting to 50 Database contains an analysis of several of these characteristics, including type and location.

How to Search
There are four search criteria available in the left-hand column: Global Region, Building Use, Climate Zone and New vs. Renovation. Each box contains a drop-down menBunker Interpretive Centeru which allows you to tailor your search to your specific interests. If you’d prefer to view the entire database at once, simply choose the “all” option in each box. You can click on the "Climate Zone Map" link to see the DOE Climate Zones.

Search Results
Once you’ve chosen your parameters and hit “Search,” you’ll be taken to the results page. Constructed in a familiar spreadsheet format, the results page contains the following items:

Name – If this item is in bold and underlined, it is a clickable link to the USGBC case study on the building
Location – City/state or Country
Size in 1,000 square feet
$/SF – Only the cost of the building, not the site, is used to calculate the square foot cost
LEED Level – If the project is LEED certified, the level is given here as a clickable link to the LEED scorecard.
Renewables – The type and percentage of building energy received from on-site renewables
EUI – The Energy Use Index for the building is given in kBtu/SF/YR
Links – Links to relevant articles and/or case studies
HVAC, Lighting, Envelope and Controls – Description of features cited by the design team as important to the success of the design.

Lack of data under a heading simply means the information on that measure was not readily available.

Inclusion in this database does not constitute an endorsement or verification of the information provided at the linked-to sites. We are simply aggregating existing information as it appears on the web. The database is a work-in-progress and will be continually expanded as new projects are identified, so check back often. We encourage feedback from site users to ensure we’re providing the most up-to-date, useful information. If you find a broken link or error in any material presented here, let us know. If you know of a project we’ve missed that should be included, we want to hear about it.
